Your standards for "listenable" must be really high, if 8-6-71 isn't listenable!
These are the best early AUDs, that might soothe even the ear of a sbd snob....

1968 has some audience recordings I like.... 3-29-68 in particular has some fans! I think it's still a bit distant & echoey - which is part of its charm - but it is the best of the year.
(3-3, 5-18, 6-14-68 are pretty grungy - I can't really put them on a "best auds" list - although I would urge everyone to hear them anyway, and be exposed to truly primal Dead....)

From 1969, 5-3-69 is a really good recording. 4-15-69 and 12-5-69 are also pretty good for the year, and no one ever mentions them.

There are lots of aud tapes from 1970 - the best-sounding are 3-21-70 late show, 10-23-70, and 6-13-70. There are also other good ones like 2-8-70, 11-20-70, and some famous Capitol Theatre recordings like 6-24 and 11-8, which should be heard by all even if they're not pristine crystal-clear stereo.
(The 6-13-70 AUD is STILL not on the Archive!)
(8-19-70 is an enjoyable listen too, I admit - but great, no - would be good for someone who likes the better-quality auds and wants to dig even deeper....)

1971, I don't remember much in the way of audience tapes other than the Hollywood shows. (Wonder why that is?)

1972 is a year notably bereft of good audience tapes, except for 4-29-72 which is great, better than the circulating sbd. I might be forgetting others.

1973 is when lots of really great-sounding recordings start to appear. 7-1-73 is the first and best that comes to mind, definitely check it out if you like 6-22-73.

Oh man, I was about to post about March, 68...and there you have it...CLIFF beat me to it.

Now, he knows I don't spend much time in March, but following his lead, and someone else (sorry! was it you, Wineland? Whirlwind? Damn...can't recall), I have listened to those of March and think that they are defn worthwhile...

"1968 has some audience recordings I like, but few people would call them good or listenable"

With all due respect, LIA, I'm going to have to disagree, a least somewhat with that, and I have not kept my disdain for audience recordings any secret.

I'm frequently drawn to the Vernon AUD of 3/29/68, which I find quite enjoyable, inspite of my revulsion towards audience recordings...
